Located at 4230 Hamilton Ave., their mission is: “CAIN is a neighborhood ministry that transforms lives and inspires hope by providing nutritious food, crisis assistance, resources, and compassion in a way that respects human dignity and builds a more vibrant community.”

Their programs include: Grace Place (temporary transitional housing without cost to women – with or without children – who are in transition from homelessness), Rainbow Choice Food Pantry (healthyhigh-quality, and safe food for food-insecure families in Northside both daytime and evening hours), and Phil’s Place (a free community weekly dinner that provides food, fosters a sense of belonging, and builds community every Monday, all year round, 5:00pm – 6:00pm).

OBSERV, sky at night

Today’s organization is the Cincinnati Observatory known as ‘The Birthplace of American Astronomy,’ it houses one of the oldest working telescopes and was the first public observatory in the western hemisphere. In 1999 the Cincinnati Observatory resurrected itself as a center for astronomy education. Their mission is to maintain the integrity and heritage of a historic 19th century observatory, while promoting the study and practice of 21st century astronomy and science. They have an educational program delivers hundreds of programs to area schools, scout meetings, libraries, and nursing homes. They support STEM in local K-12 classrooms.

Day 22

ECOECO (Environmental Community Organization) works to preserve community and environmental health as a network of dedicated individuals through organizing with communities, action to hold industry and government accountable, and education efforts.

Their most recent effort is the “Coalition 4 Fair Rates” coalition: “Together we can change how the City and County charge different customers for water and sewer services to ensure a more fair and equitable billing system.  The Hamilton County Commissioners sets the water and sewer rates and have agreed to establish a task force on affordability in 2015.

By joining the Coalition 4 Fair Rates we can improve the public, environmental, and economic health of our communities through Sewer & Water Rate Structures.  Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to affordable clean water.”

ECO invites the public to join them at the next 2016 Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati’s (MSD) Operating Budget, the 2016 – 2020 MSD Capital Improvement Program (CIP), hearing where they Commissioners will consider a revised rate structure for MSD sewerage service charges and surcharges. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at 138 East Court Street, Room 603, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Today’s countdown organization is EQUALITY CINCINNATI! Their mission is to work for full equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in Greater Cincinnati and to prevent discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Their work began in 2004 when thousands of people in our region came together to repeal an anti-gay law in Cincinnati known as “Article XII”.

First Step Home logo

 

First Step Home was founded in 1993 in response to the need for a Residential treatment facility that would permit children, ages 0 through 12, to live with their mothers during treatment. 

First Step Home promotes an environment of safety, connection, and empowerment. It is an integrated approach to treatment for women, which allows them to address issues of body, mind, and spirit in the context of addiction. , First Step Home also serves single women, pregnant women, women with criminal justice involvement, and women with long histories of abuse. They have served over 2,900 women and 1,800 children in the past 19 years.

During the holiday season, First Step Home provides its clients with the opportunity to select holiday items for themselves and their children to ensure a Merry Christmas for all! Donate toys, clothing, baby supplies, pajamas, socks, underwear, hats, gloves, and boots for infants, teens, and for the moms as well! Today’s countdown organization is Gateway House. On November 1, 1998, Gateway House began operation at 2232 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. Gateway House provides safe, affordable housing for men recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Men live in two or three bedroom apartments as they support each other’s transition into a chemical-free life. Most come to the 50 bed program from Cincinnati-area treatment centers or from local recovery community referrals. The mission of the Gateway House is to provide safe, secure, sober and affordable housing to men in recovery.

Day 18

glsen logoGLSEN Greater Cincinnati is a chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. They have been working for safe and respectful k-12 schools for all students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression in Greater Cincinnati since 1995.

GLSEN Greater Cincinnati offers proactive ways to address anti-LGBT bullying and bias in schools, and they provide a number of resources for youth in the Greater Cincinnati area including Youth Group (a fun, safe, supportive, and confidential environment for LGBTQ youth and their allies. (http://www.glsencincinnati.org/youthgroup/), the  GLBTQ Youth Summit, Prom (their alternative to high school proms that can be less than comfortable for LGBTQ students, and student-led Gay-Straight Alliances, (GSAs) or “diversity clubs”.

Day 17

 Today’s countdown is “Greater Cincinnati Earth Day Coalition”! This organization hosts The Cincinnati Earth Day Celebration is an annual community event that celebrates a greener earth. They are a coalition who work cooperatively and actively to promote the beauty and environmental quality of the tri-state area. 

 Their areas of work includes: Providing a forum for discussion leading to action * Serving as a network for environmental resources and information * Identifying specific environmental issues and areas of concern in the tri-state area *Promoting community awareness of these areas * Addressing and increasing community participation in creative solutions for these areas of concern. 

 The 2016 Cincinnati Earth celebration will take place on Saturday, April 16 at Sawyer Point from Noon-5 p.m.

Day 16

 Today’s countdown member organization is the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition! Formed in 1984, they are a unified social action agency, fully committed to the ultimate goal: the eradication of homelessness with respect for the dignity and diversity of its membership, the homeless and the community.

Every year the Coalition celebrates the accomplishments of its members, the community and the supporters at an Annual Dinner and Award Ceremony. Join them 12-9-15 (tomorrow!) for a night of dinner, awards, dancing and a Silent Auction. Tickets available on their website or at the door.

 Day 15

 Today’s countdown member organization is The Health Resource Center of Cincinnati! Known in the community as the HRC, they are a nurse managed clinic providing affordable health care for low-income, indigent, and homeless adults and transitional youth with serious and chronic mental, emotional, behavioral, and/or substance use disorders.   They provide “safety net” social and mental health services including psychiatric, pharmacological, and psychotherapeutic services as well as episodic health care medical services.

Day 14

Today’s countdown organization is Imago! Imago is a grassroots, environmental education organization located in the Price Hill neighborhood of Cincinnati, OH. For over 30 years Imago has been modeling and educating about living in concert with the natural world, both animate and inanimate, human and non.

Join Imago on Dec 18th at 6pm for their most popular celebration, the Winter Solstice! They will reflect on the gifts of the past year and look forward to the coming year and the return of the sun. Potluck at 6:00 followed by the celebration at 7:00. The celebration involves reflection, storytelling, art-making and a history of Solstice celebrations from around the world. Folks can stay after the celebration for a night hike and to enjoy each other’s company. Families welcome, we’ll have activities to keep young ones entertained.

Today’s countdown organization is Keep Cincinnati Beautiful! KCB helps decrease litter and blight, promote sustainability, and cultivate community pride through education and beautification. They help residents improve their neighborhoods and the environment by managing innovative programs and resources, leveraging partnerships, and organizing volunteer events. They offer grants, cleanup supplies, education, and more.

Day 12

Today’s countdown organization is Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled! LADD was founded in 1975 by parents who had a son or a daughter with a developmental disability. In 1976, LADD began one of the first education-based residential programs for independent living in the Cincinnati area. Today they provide a variety of community-based services for adults with disabilities across Hamilton County, and they continue to provide residential services at their original Victory Parkway location. Their mission: to facilitate the education of adults with disabilities to realize their aspirations.

They serve young adults just leaving high school to older adults who qualify for senior services. Their community-based services are unique in the way they teach independent living skills that will help people become self-sufficient and less dependent on others.

Day 11

Today’s countdown organization is the League of Women Voters!

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.  League of Women Voters has three separate and distinct roles. Voters Service/Citizen Education (they present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues), Action/Advocacy, and Membership/Volunteerism. They invite us all to join us their first ever Making Democracy Work Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m, honoring Mimi Gingold and Al Gerhardstein with our first Making Democracy Work award.

Day 10

 Today’s countdown organization is the League of Animal Welfare!

 The League for Animal Welfare (LFAW), a nonprofit organization, operates the first established and largest adoption center and no-kill animal shelter in Cincinnati. Through a variety of innovative programs including adoptions, spay and neuter and humane education, they strive to ensure that animal companionship is accessible to all.

 On December 18th they will have their next Adoption Event. They invite the pubic to meet their adoptable pets in Petsmart in Eastgate! Meet both dogs and cats, or just say hello while shopping for your own supplies. Petsmart is located at 650 Eastgate South Boulevard next to Best Buy.

 Today’s countdown organization is “MUSE”.  MUSE is an inclusive and feminist choral community advocating for peace and social justice. They unite their voices to raise awareness and inspire change in themselves, their audiences, and our world through partnerships that honor the humanity and enduring spirit of all people. MUSE begins her fourth decade with a strong and renewed commitment to musical excellence and social change and welcomes new artistic director, Rhonda Juliano.  MUSE performs in about 30 venues each season and has grown to sixty singers with an administrative corps of over a dozen. Now highly regarded nationally as well as in the greater Cincinnati area, MUSE continues to be guided by her original vision of creating a choral community of feminist women of varied ages, races, and ethnicities with a range of musical abilities, political interests, and life experiences — women loving women, united in song.

OJPC’s mission is to create fair, intelligent, redemptive criminal-justice systems through zealous client-centered advocacy, innovative policy reform, and cross-sector community education.

The OJPC leads in serving the needs of people directly affected by the criminal justice system. They collaborate with individuals and organizations, including their organizing partners at the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, to develop public policy that spreads fair, intelligent, redemptive criminal justice through Ohio.

 Today’s Countdown Organization is the Over the Rhine Community Housing! OTRCH is a non-profit community development organization that provides a wide spectrum of affordable and supportive housing options with life-changing programs that help low-income residents in Over-the-Rhine succeed.

 OTRCH works to ensure that existing, low-wealth residents benefit from their neighborhood revitalization initiatives. Their developments contribute to the local economy through employment opportunities, supporting community businesses by purchasing materials and supplies locally, and by infusing the income tax base of the neighborhood. Most recently OTRCH has focused on developing permanent and transitional supportive housing for homeless individuals.

Day 6

Today’s Facebook Countdown Organization is Parents for Public Schools of Greater Cincinnati!

PPSGC was formed in 1995 as an affiliate of the national organization. The PPS model was introduced to Cincinnati by Kelly Butler, formerly a Cincinnati public school parent.

In an era when American public schools are imperiled by the increasing polarization dividing teachers, administrator and voters, PPS has earned the trust of these key groups in Cincinnati because of their demonstrated ability to play a constructive and collaborative role.

In 2006, the PPSGC started the Parent Leadership Institute. This professional development program is designed to empower parents to be effective advocates for Ohio’s children. Their next deadline to apply for this free program is Jan. 11, 2016. More info on their website (http://www.ppsgc.org/).

Today’s countdown organization is “Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio Region”. For more than 85 years PPSWO has been the leading reproductive health care provider, educator and advocate for Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky communities.  Their 7 health centers provide a wide range of reproductive health care services to tens of thousands of women and men who rely upon their services. 

As the region’s most trusted reproductive health care provider and an integral part of the local health care safety net, Planned Parenthood tirelessly advocates on behalf of their patients and also the thousands who unfortunately go without needed health care services.  They offer a wide array of education programs, and at their Northside office they offer FREE confidential or anonymous rapid HIV and Hepatitus C testing.
